Nexus 7 Vs. The World: Our favorite cheap tablets
If you’re in the market for a small tablet (say around the 7-inch mark) then you are spoiled for choice right now. There are some great options on the market, persistent rumors about some impending new releases, and prices are getting competitive. Let’s take a look at the contenders, kicking off with the Android platform. All three of these Android tablets are priced at $200 (for the 8GB versions) and they all have 7-inch displays. You can see a full comparison table in our Nexus 7 vs. Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet: $200 tablet showdown.
Our Nexus 7 review makes it pretty clear that Google’s 7-inch Jelly Bean tablet is a beauty. It’s cheap; it’s feature-packed; and it runs the very latest version of the Android platform. With a class-leading quad-core processor and a high resolution IPS LCD screen (1280 x 800 pixels), what’s not to like? The lack of a microSD card slot disappointed some people, and the Nexus 7 depends on Wi-Fi (there’s no mobile network option), but beyond that it’s an impressive piece of kit. Kindle Fire
Amazon’s offering has been around for a while now. It’s a solid device and Amazon is able to link in a great selection of content, but specs-wise it pales in comparison with the Nexus 7. If you primarily want an e-reader then go for a cheap Kindle. If you want a tablet then go for the Nexus 7. The Kindle Fire simply isn’t the best at anything at the moment, though that may change this week. Amazon is rumored to announce a new Kindle Fire.
Nokia, Microsoft’s latest offering: Lumia 920 out today
Nokia and Microsoft Corp will take the wraps off the struggling European company’s most powerful smartphone on Wednesday, in what may be their last major shot at winning back a market lost to Apple , Samsungand Google. The world’s largest software maker and the Finnish company that once dominated the cellphone market will showcase the device in New York on Wednesday morning and demo it for industry insiders about the same time in Helsinki. Microsoft and Nokia hope the new Lumia will become a potent weapon in an escalating global mobile industry war. Google’s Motorola Mobility intends to show off its latest smartphone on Wednesday, Amazon.com Inc will unwrap new Kindle Fire tablets the day after, and Apple is expected to unveil the latest version of its seminal iPhone on 12 September. Samsung Electronics says it will sell its own Windows phone as early as next month. The Lumia 920 and smaller Lumia 820 will run on the latest Windows Phone operating software, which Microsoft hopes will rival Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android to become a third mobile platform. If the new phones do not appeal to consumers, it could spell the end for loss-making Nokia and deal a serious blow to Microsoft’s attempts to regain its footing in the market. Leaked pictures of the two models show a similar look to Nokia’s previous Windows phones, but analysts say these alone will not be enough to turn the corner. “There have to be more devices, and their features have to stand out more. There has to be a ‘wow’ device,” said Hannu Rauhala, analyst at Pohjola Bank, who cut his recommendation on Nokia’s shares to “reduce” on Tuesday. The stakes are high for both Nokia and Microsoft. The Finnish handset maker has logged more than 3 billion euros in operating losses in the past 18 months, forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs and pursue asset sales. Its share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday, before the iPhone was launched in 2007. Windows phones have only captured 3.7 percent of the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Android phones have 68 percent, while Apple has 17 percent. For Microsoft, successful Lumia sales could convince more handset makers and carriers to support its Windows Phone 8 software, which promises faster performance and a customizable start screen. Last week Samsung became the first to announce a smartphone running Windows Phone 8, at the IFA trade show in Berlin. But it was not able to provide the model to visitors at the show.http://www.firstpost.com
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 ICS update with no OTA
For the people Android faithful that own a Samsung Galaxy S2 on the T-Mobile network who have been patiently waiting intended for Samsung and T-Mobile for making the Android Snow Cream Sandwich update open to their smartphone, you might need to know that ICS to your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 is actually available. According to the guys over in Android Community, T-Mobile confirmed by means of their support page that the ICS update to the Samsung Galaxy S2 could well be available as from the 11th of July at 11: 00PM EST/ 8: 00PM PST, and unfortunately your ICS update will not be available over the oxygen. As for some reason Samsung as well as T-Mobile have do not deliver the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Galaxy S2 OTA, the update should be grabbed via your Samsung Kies software program, which can be a simple process if Samsung Kies works because it should, but much less easy as an in the air update by natural means. According to the guys the most likely basis for the Ice Lotion Sandwich update not coming in the air is simply because they class the replace as ‘optional’ understanding that it will get rid of the users residence screen, which means the user will have to set up their particular device again. However Android Snow Cream Sandwich is more of any recommended update in comparison with an optional one, as the COMPUTER ITSELF was quite a noticeable difference, and no doubt every Android end users wants ICS on their handset. So basically in case you own the Samsung Universe S2 on T-Mobile you will have to download the Samsung Kies software in case you don’t already are, install and manage the software on your hard disk, enable USB debugging on your SGS2 in settings>menu>apps>development, then connect via UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS, click and agree to update, and you ought to be good to go. So there a person go, if you keep the T-Mobile Samsung Universe S2 and get the Android Snow Cream Sandwich replace via Samsung Kies, feel free to contact us how it just about all goes.

In a British survey released last week by mobile phone tech company SecureEnvoy, two thirds of 1,000 people polled said they feared being phoneless, up from 53 per cent four years ago.
Those aged 18-24 suffered the most (77 per cent) followed by those aged 25-34 (68 per cent).
Women were nine per cent more likely to be what is now dubbed nomophobic (as in "no-mobile-phobia"). Researchers guess that this may be due to the fact men often carry a second cell phone.
Signs of nomophobia include trembling, sweating, and nausea when a mobile phone is out of reach, according to AllAboutCounseling.com.
Also, if you obsessively check for your phone or worry about whether or not it is in a safe place, you may also have a problem.
If you suffer from nomophobia, aim for phobia treatments such as trying to go without your mobile for a time, avoiding negative thoughts, and trying breathing techniques or yoga.
If you fear a sense of disconnection more than anything, the site advises, it may be time to seek professional help.
Doctors and chiropractors are also claiming too much time spent bent over mobile devices is causing a rise in a range of symptoms such as neck strain, headaches, and pain in the shoulders, and sometimes in the arms and hands - a syndrome coined "text neck."
The HTC One X (previously the Endeavor/Edge/Supreme) is expected to stride out on stage at MWC 2012 and wave its quad-core powered crown jewels right in our face.
Quad-core is one of the buzz words in the mobile phone industry this year and we expect to see a number of devices packing serious power over the next 11 months.
We first heard rumblings on the HTC One X back in November last year under the moniker of the HTC Edge and rumours have sprouted from there.
The One X is set to be the world's first quad-core phone, although there have been reports the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola have been sniffing around.
Samsung has since announced that it will not be flaunting the Galaxy S3 at MWC but there are rumblings that LG is prepping its quad-core X3 handset which could go head-to-head with the HTC One X in Barcelona.
To make it easier for you, dear reader, here's a round up of all the gossip rumbling through the rumour mill:
HTC One X name
The name looks set to be the HTC One X, which seems a bit super futuristic to us - but sources are claiming this is where HTC wants to take its new flgaship model. Who are we to argue?
HTC One X processor
Ok so there are no two ways about it: the HTC One X is all about its quad-core processor.
Reports suggested it will sport Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor which will house four 1.5GHz chips. That's an awful lot of power and thus we expect the One X to be lightning quick.
HTC One X specs
Update: It's being rumoured that the One X will lose the famous HTC four button set up below the display in favour of on screen options. This puts the image above in doubt, as it clearly shows the four buttons below the screen.
Of course no processor alone will deliver you a mind blowing mobile experience, decent specs are required to provide the complete package.
It looks like the quad-core processor will be backed up by 1GB RAM which should have no trouble in running Google's latest Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich.
Update: The One X is set to come with 32GB of internal storage, but it will not support microSD or any other type of expandable memory card.
A recently leaked ROM for the One X seems to confirm that it will be running Android version 4.0.3 will HTC's latest 4.0 sense interface over the top.
Update: It has now been suggested that the One X will ship with version 4.0.5 of Ice Cream Sandwich.

When it rains, it pours. As we’ve seen with Dell Voice, the VoIP market is getting increasingly heated in Canada. Vonage is launching its Vonage Mobile service in app form for iPhone and Android, after providing free calls between Facebook users last year.
Vonage uses high-definition codecs between app users, and calls are free for anyone using the app or a Vonage number. In addition, to promote the service, the company is making calls free to anyone in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a limited time. After that, rates will be “on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype.”
The app, which is available on both Android and iPhone, looks good and works quite well. At this time only a small number of my contacts are available for free app to app calls, which are purportedly “exceptional[ly] high-definition.” Outgoing calls use your existing phone number as call display, so unlike Dell Voice, which gives you an entirely new number, outgoing Vonage calls shouldn’t be cause to have your recipients hit the Ignore button.
International rates are pretty low: we’re looking at less than 2.2c/min for China, and U.K., while India is 2.4c/min. Conveniently, credit can be bought using in-app purchasing in both the Android and iPhone app.
Vonage also gives you the ability to send text messages to Vonage users from within the app. Now that there is a mobile version of the popular home phone service, hopefully more people will sign up.
Check out Vonage Mobile for Android and iOS and let us know what you think.

Cell phones disappear daily. They're sometimes merely misplaced but they are often stolen. For a thief, cell phones are a pretty popular target due to the fact they are small and easier to take and to sell than most items. They can easily bring in $50 or more per phone. Then of course, most thieves merely take the phone and use it until the owner has the phone disabled.
Find out how to prevent cell phone theft, what real risks are, and what to do about stolen cell phones here.
Preventing Cell Phone Theft
There are a few things cell phone owners can do to reduce the possibility of losing the cell phone, having it stolen, or reducing the damage that can occur in either instance:
Use a clip or leash to keep your cell phone attached to your body.
Don't leave an unattended phone laying in clear view or in a purse that isn't in a locked compartment.
Consider carefully what information you store on your cell phone. If it would create too big of a disaster if it fell into someone else's hands, don't store it. You may not prevent someone from taking your phone, but you can prevent them from accessing important information.
Encrypt the data on your cell phone to prevent others from using it.
You can slow down a thief at least by using passwords to restrict easy access to the keypad. Read this Microsoft page on the importance of selecting a strong password.

Nokia‘s upcoming Windows Phone flagship, the Lumia 900 aka the AT&T Nokia Ace, has been further detailed in another pre-CES leak. The roughly 4.3-inch WVGA smartphone will squeeze an 8-megapixel camera and 1,830 mAh battery into a near-12mm thick case, Pocketnow‘s sources claim, with the Ace/900 weighing just 18g more than the 3.7-inch Lumia 800 at 160g.
An image purportedly of the AT&T Ace leaked last week, showing the carrier’s logo as well as a 4G icon and front-facing camera. The assumption is that the Ace 900 will be one of AT&T’s first 4G LTE Windows Phones, tipped to go on sale sometime prior to the middle of 2012.
Other specs include 512MB of RAM and – despite a presumed carrier lock to AT&T – the inclusion of the 1700MHz band necessary for 3G on T-Mobile USA. The device is supposedly codenamed “Eloko” and will ship running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, rather than Tango as some earlier rumors indicated.
Pocketnow threw together a size comparison mockup based on leaked dimension details of the Lumia 900, next to the existing 800, which you can see below.
