HTC brings two smartphones with Windows Phone 8 OS

TThe HTC 8X and 8S smartphones have dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 mobile processor inside them. HTC has finally announced two Microsoft Windows Phone 8 based smartphones. Named as HTC 8X and HTC 8S, the smartphones feature a new unibody design based on the Windows Phone Live Tiles styling and come with premium matte finish in all colours. The HTC 8X is a top end Windows Phone 8 device with 720p HD native resolution bearing display while the HTC 8S is a mid-range device that lacks a front facing camera. HTC plans to make the new 8X and 8S available in over 50 countries starting this November. Earlier, as The Mobile Indian had also reported, HTC was said to have been working on three Windows Phone 8 based devices codenamed as Accord, Rio and Zenith. Recently the details of the HTC 8X had surfaced online as well. Just like the new One series, HTC has employed a similar model names and design strategy with the new Windows Phone 8 based smartphones.

HTC 8X The HTC 8X features a 4.3-inch S-LCD 2 touchscreen display, manufactured using the new Corning Gorilla Glass 2 technology for great durability, slim glass panel and scratch-resistance. This display features 1280x720 pixel resolution natively and offers 341 pixels per inch pixel density. HTC has also added a layer of optical lamination for better sharpness, clarity and also to reduce the light reflection. That means the content on the screen would be legible even in bright daylight. HTC has packed a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 mobile processor along with 1 GB RAM and 16 GB on-board storage. This smartphone supports LTE networks along with 3G networks and offers wireless connectivity options through Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and faster dual-band WiFi. At the back, the HTC 8X flaunts an 8 megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and ultra-wide angle lens to capture more details. HTC has added dedicated ImageChip for faster focus and also deliver clear, sharp images. This camera is capable of recording 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second and HTC has provided dedicated camera button for this device. The 8X also has a 2.1 megapixel front facing camera for high quality video call and chat. HTC has integrated the Beats Audio technology along with exclusively built-in amplifiers and also offered support for Near Field Communication. The HTC 8X has non-removable 1800 mAh battery and weighs about 130 grams with battery - almost same as the HTC One X. Surprisingly, there is no mention about expandable storage and we believe that it does not offer any.

Nexus 7 Vs. The World: Our favorite cheap tablets

Nexus 7 Vs. The World: Our favorite cheap tablets

If you’re in the market for a small tablet (say around the 7-inch mark) then you are spoiled for choice right now. There are some great options on the market, persistent rumors about some impending new releases, and prices are getting competitive. Let’s take a look at the contenders, kicking off with the Android platform. All three of these Android tablets are priced at $200 (for the 8GB versions) and they all have 7-inch displays. You can see a full comparison table in our Nexus 7 vs. Kindle Fire vs. Nook Tablet: $200 tablet showdown.

Nexus 7
Our Nexus 7 review makes it pretty clear that Google’s 7-inch Jelly Bean tablet is a beauty. It’s cheap; it’s feature-packed; and it runs the very latest version of the Android platform. With a class-leading quad-core processor and a high resolution IPS LCD screen (1280 x 800 pixels), what’s not to like? The lack of a microSD card slot disappointed some people, and the Nexus 7 depends on Wi-Fi (there’s no mobile network option), but beyond that it’s an impressive piece of kit. Kindle Fire
Amazon’s offering has been around for a while now. It’s a solid device and Amazon is able to link in a great selection of content, but specs-wise it pales in comparison with the Nexus 7. If you primarily want an e-reader then go for a cheap Kindle. If you want a tablet then go for the Nexus 7. The Kindle Fire simply isn’t the best at anything at the moment, though that may change this week. Amazon is rumored to announce a new Kindle Fire.

Nokia, Microsoft’s latest offering: Lumia 920 out today

Nokia, Microsoft’s latest offering: Lumia 920 out today

Nokia and Microsoft Corp will take the wraps off the struggling European company’s most powerful smartphone on Wednesday, in what may be their last major shot at winning back a market lost to Apple , Samsungand Google. The world’s largest software maker and the Finnish company that once dominated the cellphone market will showcase the device in New York on Wednesday morning and demo it for industry insiders about the same time in Helsinki. Microsoft and Nokia hope the new Lumia will become a potent weapon in an escalating global mobile industry war. Google’s Motorola Mobility intends to show off its latest smartphone on Wednesday, Amazon.com Inc will unwrap new Kindle Fire tablets the day after, and Apple is expected to unveil the latest version of its seminal iPhone on 12 September. Samsung Electronics says it will sell its own Windows phone as early as next month. The Lumia 920 and smaller Lumia 820 will run on the latest Windows Phone operating software, which Microsoft hopes will rival Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android to become a third mobile platform. If the new phones do not appeal to consumers, it could spell the end for loss-making Nokia and deal a serious blow to Microsoft’s attempts to regain its footing in the market. Leaked pictures of the two models show a similar look to Nokia’s previous Windows phones, but analysts say these alone will not be enough to turn the corner. “There have to be more devices, and their features have to stand out more. There has to be a ‘wow’ device,” said Hannu Rauhala, analyst at Pohjola Bank, who cut his recommendation on Nokia’s shares to “reduce” on Tuesday. The stakes are high for both Nokia and Microsoft. The Finnish handset maker has logged more than 3 billion euros in operating losses in the past 18 months, forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs and pursue asset sales. Its share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday, before the iPhone was launched in 2007. Windows phones have only captured 3.7 percent of the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Android phones have 68 percent, while Apple has 17 percent. For Microsoft, successful Lumia sales could convince more handset makers and carriers to support its Windows Phone 8 software, which promises faster performance and a customizable start screen. Last week Samsung became the first to announce a smartphone running Windows Phone 8, at the IFA trade show in Berlin. But it was not able to provide the model to visitors at the show.

ECOSYSTEM WARRIORS Apple’s first iPhone revolutionized the mobile industry, popularizing the model of a third-party developer “ecosystem,” today considered pivotal to the success of any operating system. Part of the reason for the limited success of Windows phones is that they support only 100,000 or so apps, compared with about 500,000 or more for Android or iPhones. There is also the interconnection between apps and content, typified by Apple’s iTunes and iCloud, which share content across devices, that acts as a powerful disincentive to switch between vendors. “Much has been made of Windows Phone emerging as ‘the third ecosystem’ in mobile. This is a huge task in itself, but Apple’s and Google’s entrenched positions where consumers have already invested heavily in apps and content makes switching platforms less attractive,” said Ben Wood from mobile sector research firm CCS Insight. The new phone software is similar to the Windows 8 desktop and tablet software to be released on October 26, making it easier for developers to write apps for both, and Microsoft hopes this will boost the platform’s popularity. But the Windows operating system is by no means universally popular in the PC market, so consumers will not necessarily come to the mobile phone equivalent with unalloyed goodwill. “Consumer perceptions of the Windows brand have been shaped by PC usage. Although Windows 8 will help, there is still plenty of work required to overcome historical prejudices in the transition to mobile,” said Wood. The new Lumias could, however, benefit from the continuing decline in Research In Motion Ltd’s BlackBerry, and also from a recent legal blow to the Android operating system. A California jury decided last month that some of Samsung’s hot-selling Android smartphones copied features of the iPhone, which may result in import bans and drive handset makers to put more resources into making Windows-based phones. But for Nokia and Microsoft to exploit that window of opportunity, it must first find favour with consumers, who so far have shown little enthusiasm for smartphones with Windows software. Latest malady of the tech-obsessed: "no-mobile-phobia"

In a British survey released last week by mobile phone tech company SecureEnvoy, two thirds of 1,000 people polled said they feared being phoneless, up from 53 per cent four years ago.

Those aged 18-24 suffered the most (77 per cent) followed by those aged 25-34 (68 per cent).

Women were nine per cent more likely to be what is now dubbed nomophobic (as in "no-mobile-phobia"). Researchers guess that this may be due to the fact men often carry a second cell phone.

Signs of nomophobia include trembling, sweating, and nausea when a mobile phone is out of reach, according to AllAboutCounseling.com.

Also, if you obsessively check for your phone or worry about whether or not it is in a safe place, you may also have a problem.

If you suffer from nomophobia, aim for phobia treatments such as trying to go without your mobile for a time, avoiding negative thoughts, and trying breathing techniques or yoga.

If you fear a sense of disconnection more than anything, the site advises, it may be time to seek professional help.

Doctors and chiropractors are also claiming too much time spent bent over mobile devices is causing a rise in a range of symptoms such as neck strain, headaches, and pain in the shoulders, and sometimes in the arms and hands - a syndrome coined "text neck."

Latest Mobile Phone Updates : HTC One X: what you need to know

The HTC One X (previously the Endeavor/Edge/Supreme) is expected to stride out on stage at MWC 2012 and wave its quad-core powered crown jewels right in our face.

Quad-core is one of the buzz words in the mobile phone industry this year and we expect to see a number of devices packing serious power over the next 11 months.

mobile shopping in chennai

We first heard rumblings on the HTC One X back in November last year under the moniker of the HTC Edge and rumours have sprouted from there.

The One X is set to be the world's first quad-core phone, although there have been reports the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola have been sniffing around.

Samsung has since announced that it will not be flaunting the Galaxy S3 at MWC but there are rumblings that LG is prepping its quad-core X3 handset which could go head-to-head with the HTC One X in Barcelona.

To make it easier for you, dear reader, here's a round up of all the gossip rumbling through the rumour mill:
HTC One X name

The name looks set to be the HTC One X, which seems a bit super futuristic to us - but sources are claiming this is where HTC wants to take its new flgaship model. Who are we to argue?
HTC One X processor

Ok so there are no two ways about it: the HTC One X is all about its quad-core processor.

Reports suggested it will sport Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor which will house four 1.5GHz chips. That's an awful lot of power and thus we expect the One X to be lightning quick.

HTC One X specs

Update: It's being rumoured that the One X will lose the famous HTC four button set up below the display in favour of on screen options. This puts the image above in doubt, as it clearly shows the four buttons below the screen.

Of course no processor alone will deliver you a mind blowing mobile experience, decent specs are required to provide the complete package.

It looks like the quad-core processor will be backed up by 1GB RAM which should have no trouble in running Google's latest Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich.

Update: The One X is set to come with 32GB of internal storage, but it will not support microSD or any other type of expandable memory card.

A recently leaked ROM for the One X seems to confirm that it will be running Android version 4.0.3 will HTC's latest 4.0 sense interface over the top.

Update: It has now been suggested that the One X will ship with version 4.0.5 of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Vonage Mobile launches with free Canada and U.S. calling for a limited time

When it rains, it pours. As we’ve seen with Dell Voice, the VoIP market is getting increasingly heated in Canada. Vonage is launching its Vonage Mobile service in app form for iPhone and Android, after providing free calls between Facebook users last year.

mobile showroom in chennai

Vonage uses high-definition codecs between app users, and calls are free for anyone using the app or a Vonage number. In addition, to promote the service, the company is making calls free to anyone in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a limited time. After that, rates will be “on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype.”

The app, which is available on both Android and iPhone, looks good and works quite well. At this time only a small number of my contacts are available for free app to app calls, which are purportedly “exceptional[ly] high-definition.” Outgoing calls use your existing phone number as call display, so unlike Dell Voice, which gives you an entirely new number, outgoing Vonage calls shouldn’t be cause to have your recipients hit the Ignore button.

International rates are pretty low: we’re looking at less than 2.2c/min for China, and U.K., while India is 2.4c/min. Conveniently, credit can be bought using in-app purchasing in both the Android and iPhone app.

Vonage also gives you the ability to send text messages to Vonage users from within the app. Now that there is a mobile version of the popular home phone service, hopefully more people will sign up.

Check out Vonage Mobile for Android and iOS and let us know what you think.

Stolen Cell Phones: What to do?

Cell phones disappear daily. They're sometimes merely misplaced but they are often stolen. For a thief, cell phones are a pretty popular target due to the fact they are small and easier to take and to sell than most items. They can easily bring in $50 or more per phone. Then of course, most thieves merely take the phone and use it until the owner has the phone disabled.

Find out how to prevent cell phone theft, what real risks are, and what to do about stolen cell phones here.

Preventing Cell Phone Theft
There are a few things cell phone owners can do to reduce the possibility of losing the cell phone, having it stolen, or reducing the damage that can occur in either instance:

Use a clip or leash to keep your cell phone attached to your body.

Don't leave an unattended phone laying in clear view or in a purse that isn't in a locked compartment.

Consider carefully what information you store on your cell phone. If it would create too big of a disaster if it fell into someone else's hands, don't store it. You may not prevent someone from taking your phone, but you can prevent them from accessing important information.

Encrypt the data on your cell phone to prevent others from using it.

You can slow down a thief at least by using passwords to restrict easy access to the keypad. Read this Microsoft page on the importance of selecting a strong password.

Nokia Lumia 900 “AT&T Ace” specs revealed

Nokia‘s upcoming Windows Phone flagship, the Lumia 900 aka the AT&T Nokia Ace, has been further detailed in another pre-CES leak. The roughly 4.3-inch WVGA smartphone will squeeze an 8-megapixel camera and 1,830 mAh battery into a near-12mm thick case, Pocketnow‘s sources claim, with the Ace/900 weighing just 18g more than the 3.7-inch Lumia 800 at 160g.

An image purportedly of the AT&T Ace leaked last week, showing the carrier’s logo as well as a 4G icon and front-facing camera. The assumption is that the Ace 900 will be one of AT&T’s first 4G LTE Windows Phones, tipped to go on sale sometime prior to the middle of 2012.

Other specs include 512MB of RAM and – despite a presumed carrier lock to AT&T – the inclusion of the 1700MHz band necessary for 3G on T-Mobile USA. The device is supposedly codenamed “Eloko” and will ship running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, rather than Tango as some earlier rumors indicated.

Pocketnow threw together a size comparison mockup based on leaked dimension details of the Lumia 900, next to the existing 800, which you can see below.

Nokia limps again into the U.S. with T-Mobile

Nokia said nowadays it is joining up with T-Mobile USA to produce the Lumia 710 beginning next season. The Lumia 710 is better known as the cheaper of the two smartphones on the market the organization presented in July.

So let me get this straight: the former mobile powerhouse that horribly needs another chance is debuting with the lowest nationally service provider as its lover, using its middle-of-the-road cellphone as the start system. Seriously?

Nokia required to put its best base ahead with its first Enthusiasm windows Phone in the U.S. It required an item or service that could mix up some pleasure for the organization, not just for itself, but for Enthusiasm windows Phone as a foundation as well. It required to provide what Enthusiasm has horribly popular for its well-liked, but retail pushed managing system: a real main cellphone.

Sorry, but the Lumia 710 isn't it.

Nokia people a ton of difficulties in fixing its existence in the U.S. Its organization here has passed from its major times a several years ago. People, meanwhile, haven't exactly accepted the Enthusiasm windows Phone operating-system on which the Finnish organization has pinned its wants.

Latest Nokia Lumia 900 mobile arriving in February in chennai

The hills are alive with the sound of mobiles. The latest clue to the launch of the hotly anticipated Nokia Lumia 900 has come from the land of cuckoo clocks and chocolate, with a Swiss phone network revealing the Windows Phone will arrive in Europe in February.

mobile shopping in chennai

Swisscom revealed the date in a tweet to a customer asking after the Nokia Lumia 800, which recently launched in the UK -- mightily impressing your humble correspondent in the process. The 800 is set to be the middle level of Nokia's Windows Phone range, with the 900 lording it up as the high-end model.

The Lumia 800 lands in Europe in January, and the 900 lands at the end of February if Swisscom's tweet is to be believed. The 900 hasn't been officially announced yet, but could take a bow at international technology bonanza CES in Las Vegas in January.

Reports suggest the Lumia 900 packs a 4.3-inch screen, 1.4GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera. It could also bring with it the next generation of Windows Phone software, provisionally titled Tango.

Meanwhile the Lumia 800 is getting close to a US release, with reports that Yank network Verizon is planning to sell a 4G version of the phone.

The Lumia 710, announced alongside the Lumia 800 earlier this year, is also edging closer to shops. The 710 is the third phone in Nokia's Windows Phone lineup, and is the more affordable model of the trio. It'll be the first Nokia Windows Phone to cross the pond when it launches in the US on 11 January on T-Mobile, and word on the street puts it in British shops in January too.

Fingers crossed the Lumia 900 puts in an appearance at CES; CNET UK will be in Sin City to get our sticky fingers on all the new gadgets and gizmos making their debut in Vegas, bringing you all the news, previews and videos. Is a Nokia Windows Phone one of your favourite things? Tell us in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Update: Nokia has contacted us to say that the Swisscom representative confused the 710 and the 900, and it's the 710 that will be released before the end of February.

BlackBerry delay darkens RIM's future

A critical delay in Research in Motion's next generation of BlackBerry smartphones sent RIM shares on yet another downward spiral on Friday and pushed some analysts to sound the death knell for the mobile device that once defined the industry.

RIM's announcement late Thursday that it expected to launch smartphones powered by its new QNX operating system months after initially expected revived calls for sweeping changes in RIM's management led by co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie.

The delay, combined with a dismal performance outlook issued along with its quarterly results, sparked renewed chatter about the break-up of the Canadian tech giant, which has floundered as Apple Inc and other nimbler competitors claw away at its market share.

"RIM confirmed the BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be delayed until the latter part of calendar 2012. This could be game over for the BlackBerry franchise," analysts at Canadian brokerage National Bank Financial wrote in a note to clients. BlackBerry 10 is the name the company has given to the QNX phones, which RIM had initially expected to deliver in the first quarter.

On Friday, the delay spurred several brokerage firms to cut their price targets and ratings on RIM shares and sent the Waterloo, Ontario-based company's shares tumbling more than 12 percent in early trading on Friday.

"We see a high risk that this is too late to turn around RIM's position and believe the risk of further delays is meaningful," Nomura analyst Stuart Jeffrey said in a research note. "Even in the best case, however, it seems unlikely RIM will have large volumes of its BB10 devices on sale within 15 months."

RIM has been counting on the new QNX operating system to make up ground lost to Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad and the slew of devices that use Google Inc's Android software. The delay portends another long-year of transition for RIM, allowing rivals to make further in-roads into RIM's market share.

RIM on Thursday also provided a gloomy outlook for earning as sales of an interim line of legacy BlackBerry 7 smartphones lag during the crucial holiday season. Even if shipments hit the high-end of RIM's expectations during Christmas, the company will still post the first annual decline in its history.

The constant stream of bad news from RIM over the last year has driven its shares to lows not touched since early 2004, and it has led to analyst and investor demands for Balsillie and Lazaridis to step down.

"RIM reminds me of a beloved grandparent. You love them, but they are very outdated and sooner or later they will be gone," said independent analyst Jeff Kagan in an email. "Either the existing CEOs must update their thinking or bring in a new CEO to lead the company out of the darkness and back into the sunshine before it is too late."

PRICE TARGET CUTS Canaccord Genuity cut its price target on RIM's U.S.-listed shares to $15 from $18, citing the delay in the launch of BlackBerry 10 and the company's plans to spend more on sales and marketing to help sustain interim sales.

Barclays shared similar concerns about the company's projected investments in marketing and loyalty programs to regain "mind" share.

"Benefits of the investments are not guaranteed but are likely to keep RIM's operating margins at sustainably lower levels through 2012 and 2013," Barclays said.

Barclay's cut it price target on RIM's U.S.-listed shares to $14 from $16; Citigroup reduced it price target to $12 from $15, and National Bank Financial dropped its price target to $8 from $10.

Research in Motion shares, which have lost almost half their value in the last three months, fell 11 percent to $13.47 in early trading Friday on the Nasdaq. The Toronto-listed shares fell 12.1 percent to C$13.89.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is a sweet smartphone

As fans of Google's Android mobile software well know, each new version is named after a sugary treat, such as Gingerbread or Honeycomb. Android is about to get even sweeter with Ice Cream Sandwich - a smooth, feature-rich operating system that will run first on the delectable Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The combination of Google's software and Samsung's hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best candidates to compete with Apple's latest iPhone, though its price is steep. It will be available Thursday in the US for $300 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract.

Like the previous phone in the Nexus line, the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was jointly developed by Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. It features a slim frame with a large, curved glass screen that's comfortable for chatting with friends and excellent for watching videos. There are 32 gigabytes of built-in storage space on the Verizon version of the phone, but no external slot for a microSD memory card.

The screen, a pocket-busting 4.65 inches at the diagonal, makes the iPhone's 3.5-inches look diminutive. And despite the size, the Galaxy Nexus manages to weigh just 4.8 ounces, slightly less than Apple's offering.

On it, videos and Web pages looked crisp and bright, with rich colors. I started watching a video during testing - an HD copy of "The Help" that I rented from Google's Android Market - and had to force myself to break away to test other features of the device.

With the latest version of Android under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features. Many of them are great; others are simply great in theory.

Overall, the software looks fresher and less cluttered. The virtual "buttons" that usually sit at the bottom of the screen have been redesigned. There's still a "home" and a "back" button, but no "menu" button to pull up various options within an app. Instead, there's now a "recent apps" button that shows what you've been doing lately on the phone.

Another neat change: The buttons are completely virtual, so they change directions when you flip the phone sideways and disappear when you're viewing photos or videos.

Other changes to Android include an overhaul of its virtual keyboard, meant to make it easier to type without messing up - something I've always had trouble with on the stock Android keyboard. I was often able to type more accurately than in the past, but sometimes still ended up with unintended words in my messages.

The Android browser and Gmail are updated, too. Gmail's new functions include the ability to search emails while offline, while the browser is zippier and has a "request desktop" option so you can check out webpages in their non-truncated desktop version.

One new feature that falls into the "great in theory" category is Face Unlock, which uses facial-recognition technology to unlock the phone from standby mode. To set it up, you take a picture of your face with the phone. Then, all you have to do to unlock the phone is stare at the screen after you press the power button.

Most of the time it didn't work, though, probably because the phone couldn't recognise my face from certain angles. I was also able to fool it by holding up a shot of my face on an iPhone. So much for security.

Ice Cream Sandwich also has Android Beam, which lets you share such content as a Web page, map or video between two Android phones by bringing the backs of the phones close together. It only works with phones that have this Android software and near-field communication technology, though, so unless you and your friend both buy the Galaxy Nexus you'll be out of luck at launch.

More immediately useful was the phone's 5-megapixel camera, which is the snappiest I've seen on any Android phone. There was almost no shutter lag between shots, even when I had just turned the camera on.

Still, I would have preferred a higher-resolution sensor - 8-megapixel cameras are quickly becoming common on smartphones. In addition, photos I took could have been brighter, though this can be improved on somewhat by using some of the available editing options, including numerous color filters and adjustable contrast options.

Like the iPhone 4S and some other high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Nexus can record high-definition videos in 1080p - the best resolution you can get on a consumer camera. I had some fun taking sunset videos with a time-lapse feature, and there are some goofy filming effects to play around with, too.

And yes, you can make calls on the Galaxy Nexus. Its thin body and curved screen make it comfortable to hold against your ear, and calls generally sounded good.

Sadly, high-speed networks guzzle battery power like a milkshake, so I wasn't able to spend a ton of time using the device on a single battery charge.

The phone Google loaned me to test was a version that works with AT&T or T-Mobile, so I couldn't test its speed or battery life with the carrier actually selling it in the US, Verizon, or with its high-speed 4G network.

Using both T-Mobile's standard 3G and speedier HSPA+ networks, at least, I got about three hours and 15 minutes out of the Galaxy Nexus for surfing the Web, streaming a movie, sending instant messages, chatting on the phone and other activities. The phone got quite warm with all this use. Over Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, it's possible that the phone's battery would drain even faster if you're doing a lot of downloading.

Another bummer: Verizon is blocking the Galaxy Nexus from supporting Google Wallet, which is supposed to allow the phone to be used to buy items in some stores by tapping it to payment terminals.
